For the Parent, Too 💛

The best thing you can do for your kids is take care of yourself first. Here are the resources, communities, and practices that have genuinely made a difference — curated with honesty, not sponsorship.

📚 Parenting Mindset
💚
Good Inside — Dr. Becky Kennedy
goodinside.com · Podcast · Book · Community
"This is the book I wish I'd had. Dr. Becky changed how I talk to my kids and how I talk to myself." — Kelsey
Dr. Becky Kennedy is a clinical psychologist and mom of three who reframes parenting around connection over correction. Her approach helped me understand why my kids act the way they do — and why I react the way I do. The book is genuinely practical. The free Instagram content alone is worth following.
📚
Libby — Free Books from Your Library
libbyapp.com · Free with library card
"The budget-conscious reader's secret weapon. Every book you want, for free — including audiobooks you can play while folding laundry."
Libby lets you borrow ebooks and audiobooks from your local public library — completely free, with just a library card. OC and SD library cards are free to residents. Kindle users: you can send borrowed books directly to your Kindle device. Audiobook listeners: works seamlessly in your car via Bluetooth or CarPlay. Dr. Becky's book is available on Libby — borrow it before you buy.
🏃‍♀️ Movement & Fitness for Moms

First class is free. Community of moms at every stage of motherhood, from prenatal through beyond. Also offers Stroller Barre, Body Well, and mom-only classes.
🔥
MOXI3 — Boutique Fitness & Recovery
126 Rochester St, Costa Mesa · moxi3.com
OC's premier boutique fitness and recovery studio, right in Costa Mesa's east side. Cycle, Strength, Shred, and Heated Sculpt classes. Recovery amenities include infrared sauna and cold plunge — genuinely transformative after a week of mom-life. Strong community, amazing coaches. Available on ClassPass.
🧘
Ra Yoga — Costa Mesa & Newport Beach
3077 Bristol St, Costa Mesa · 4 OC locations
14 yoga styles, 100+ classes per week across 4 OC locations. Ra offers heated and non-heated classes from beginner to advanced. Wednesday parent + me yoga — one of the most grounding things you can do mid-week with your little one. Childcare available on select mornings. Also bookable on ClassPass.
🎟️
ClassPass
classpass.com · Access any studio, any class
One membership to try any studio in OC — yoga, Pilates, HIIT, cycling, barre, and more. Great if you're still figuring out what you love, or if your schedule is unpredictable (every parent's life). Use credits at Ra Yoga, MOXI3, and hundreds of other local studios. First month discounted for new members.
🌿 Holistic Wellness & Mental Health
🧡
Postpartum Support International (PSI)
postpartum.net · Free warmline available
Postpartum depression and anxiety affect 1 in 5 moms — and it doesn't always look the way you think it will. PSI offers a free helpline, peer support, local provider directory, and online support groups. If you're struggling, or you know someone who is, this is where to start.
🧠
Find a Therapist — Psychology Today
Filter by specialty, insurance, OC/SD location
There is nothing more powerful or self-aware than deciding you want to talk to someone. Psychology Today's therapist finder lets you filter by specialty (maternal mental health, anxiety, parenting), insurance, and OC or SD location. You deserve support that's just for you — not as a mom, as a person.
📓
Gratitude Journaling
5 minutes · Most underrated parenting tool
Research consistently shows that a short daily gratitude practice — even just 3 things — measurably improves mood, sleep quality, and stress resilience. For parents, it also shifts focus from what went wrong in the day to what went right. The Five-Minute Journal is the one most moms in this community recommend starting with.
🧂
Himalayan Salt Lamp
Soft light · Calming evening ritual
A small but surprisingly effective addition to a bedside table, reading nook, or nursery. The warm amber glow is noticeably gentler on your nervous system than overhead lights in the evening — helpful for winding down after a full day. Pairs well with a diffuser and five minutes of quiet before the kids' bedtime chaos subsides.
📱 Community & Accounts Worth Following
👵
@morethangrand — Instagram
instagram.com/morethangrand · 102K followers
"Helping new grandparents become the village new parents need."
If you're trying to help your parents or in-laws understand how you want to parent — without a 45-minute conversation — send them here. @morethangrand translates modern parenting approaches into language grandparents actually respond to. 102K grandparents already learning.
💚
@drbeckyatgoodinside — Instagram
Free daily parenting scripts and tools
Dr. Becky's Instagram is genuinely one of the most useful free resources for parents on the internet. Short videos, script ideas for hard parenting moments, and the kind of content you screenshot and send to your partner at 7am. Worth following even before you read the book.
🌿
OC & SD Public Library — Free Card
Unlocks Libby, story times, and museum passes
If you don't have a library card yet, this is the most high-ROI errand you'll run this month. A free card from Orange County or San Diego Public Library unlocks Libby, free children's story times, digital newspapers, and free museum passes at many branches. Takes 5 minutes online.
✨ Additional Finds Worth Knowing
🫁
Box Breathing — Free, 4 Minutes
The fastest nervous system reset available
Before any parenting tool, app, or book — there's breathing. Box breathing (4 counts in, hold 4, out 4, hold 4) activates the parasympathetic nervous system within minutes. It's what Navy SEALs use before high-stress situations. It's also what you can do in your car before walking into a meltdown. Free. Always available. Genuinely works.
🧘
Insight Timer — Free Meditation App
insighttimer.com · 70,000+ free guided meditations
The largest free meditation library in the world — the budget-conscious mom's alternative to Calm or Headspace. Search "5 minutes for stressed parents," "mom anxiety," or "parenting overwhelm" and find hundreds of free guided sessions. Even 7 minutes makes a difference on a hard day.
🌸
Essential Oil Diffuser
Lavender + eucalyptus · Bedroom or nursery
A diffuser with lavender or eucalyptus essential oil creates a wind-down signal for both you and your child. Scent is one of the most powerful nervous system cues — the same smell used consistently at bedtime becomes a genuine sleep trigger over time. Pairs naturally with the salt lamp and self-massage practice.
Magnesium Glycinate — Sleep & Calm
The supplement most moms don't know they need
Most parents — especially breastfeeding or recently postpartum moms — are deficient in magnesium without knowing it. Magnesium glycinate (the most absorbable form) taken in the evening supports deeper sleep, reduced anxiety, and muscle recovery. Worth talking to your doctor about, but widely recommended by OBs for moms.

🫶 Self-Massage & Infant Massage — The Affordable Ritual No One Talks About

One of the most effective, completely free (or nearly free) tools for stress relief and parent-child connection is also the most overlooked: touch. Self-massage and infant massage are both rooted in well-documented research for reducing cortisol, improving sleep quality, and strengthening the attachment bond between parent and baby.

You don't need expensive products. Sesame oil and coconut oil are both deeply nourishing, baby-safe, and cost a few dollars. Sesame oil has been used in Ayurvedic infant massage practice for centuries — it's warming, absorbs well, and is gentle enough for newborn skin. Coconut oil is widely available, fragrance-free, and universally tolerated. Both are perfectly appropriate for daily self-massage on your own hands, feet, and scalp — as well as gentle baby massage before or after a bath.

For infant massage: warm a small amount of oil between your palms and use slow, intentional strokes on baby's legs, arms, and back. Make eye contact. Breathe slowly. This is as much for you as for them.

For your own self-care: a five-minute foot or scalp massage with warm sesame oil before bed is a genuinely reset-level ritual that costs almost nothing and requires no one's schedule but yours.

🛢️ Sesame oil — Ayurvedic tradition, warming, baby-safe, absorbs easily
🥥 Coconut oil — Fragrance-free, widely available, gentle for all skin types
🌿 Jojoba oil — Closest to skin's natural sebum, long shelf life, non-greasy

💬 Built this because the group chat needed to exist

Hi, I'm Kelsey —
and I built this for us.

I spent a decade as a CPA in public accounting. I was the person who had the plan, the spreadsheet, and the five-year trajectory. And then the pandemic happened, and in the span of a few months I found myself at home full-time with my kids — for the first time in fifteen years with no office to go back to.

Honestly? I felt completely lost. Not because I didn't love being with my kids, but because suddenly every single decision fell to me to research from scratch: the "best" preschool (and what that even means), a pediatrician we actually trusted, activities that didn't require a second mortgage, restaurants where we wouldn't spend the whole meal whispering apologies to the table next to us.

"I spent hours in Facebook groups, texting anyone who might know, piecing together recommendations one tip at a time — until I finally found a group of experienced moms who'd already been through it. Their honest advice changed everything."

That experience — the relief of finding your people, the ones who tell you what actually works and what's a waste of time — is exactly what I wanted to bottle up and hand to every new or newer parent in Orange County and San Diego.

That's SoCal Parent Hub. Not another generic calendar or a list of things you could find with a Google search. This is meant to feel like the group chat you wish you already had. A place where someone who's living this right alongside you has already done the research — and tells you the truth about the noise level at that restaurant, the waitlist situation at that preschool, and which summer camp the kids actually begged to go back to.

And because I'm still a CPA at heart, I've tucked in practical family finance resources too. Childcare costs, family budgeting, making the money side of parenting feel a little less overwhelming — that's my lane and I'm happy to be in it.

I'm still figuring this out every single day — and I genuinely need your help to make this better. If you know a hidden gem, a camp worth shouting about, a restaurant the kids actually love, or anything this community should know about, please share it. Every tip you add makes this stronger for the next mom who shows up here exhausted and overwhelmed, just like I was.

Welcome to SoCal Parent Hub. I'm so glad you found your way here. 🌊
